The Complete Chronicles of Narnia
I love the Narnia stories but can't really say what my favourite is. I like to listen to the tapes too. I'm listening to "The Sliver Chair" just now. Finn Scherczer; Year 1 Wylam First School First published fifty years ago, and with unforgetable illustartions by Pauline Baynes, the seven titles which make up the set remain among the most popular books ever written for children. Now the Chronicles are bound together in this one magnificent volume, with a special introduction. the original illustrations, always first-class, have been rendered outstanding by the wonderfully detailed addition of colour; they are a worthy foil to the magnificance of C S Lewis's glowing and idiosyncratic text. Jade is so used to being with and agreeing with Vicky, her best friend, that when a tragic accident occurs, she can hardly believe that Vicky's no longer there. But Vicky is not going to let being dead stop her from enjoying life to the full. Wherever Jade is, Vicky makes her presence felt. |
Horrid Henry is, quite simply, the grubbiest, cheekiest, grottiest boy in the world. Not a day goes by where he isn't in some kind of terrible trouble--he really is a very, very bad boy... Francesca Simon's Horrid Henry series is ideal for children who are beginning to gain confidence in their reading, with its irreverent wit and loveable rogue of a hero getting into all sorts of mischief. A Handful of Horrid Henry brings together three of the best Horrid Henry stories (Horrid Henry, Horrid Henry and the Secret Club and Horrid Henry Tricks the Tooth Fairy in one chunky paperback book, making it the ideal gift for any child who enjoys a giggle with their reading. Ben and Mary Norm are, well, normal. Unfortunately, their parents aren't. In fact, Mr and Mrs Norm are, quite simply, impossible. So when they get the eco-bug and decide to save the planet, things get a little out of hand... Brian Patten turns the typical family on its head with his delightful notion of exceedingly well-behaved children coping with extraordinarily badly behaved parents (think Saffy from Absolutely Fabulous coping with her mother Edina's wicked ways, but for much younger children!). The result is a pacy, funny little book, ideal for young readers who like to get to grips with a book that is not only enjoyable, but also brings environmental issues very much to the fore.
